Each age group’s curriculum is designed with a clear understanding of the children’s needs and abilities, and is aligned with the New York City Department of Education Pre-Kindergarten Performance Standards. Our instructional program integrates the four learning domains – social-emotional, physical, creative expression/aesthetic, and cognitive development that includes language and literacy, as well as mathematical and scientific thinking.
- Social-emotional domain: Through story readings, discussions, and dramatic plays students are taught to identify and express their needs, opinion, and feelings. They are also taught to maintain self-control, behave in a socially-appropriate manner, and utilize positive conflict resolution methods. Children perform classroom tasks to learn classroom-appropriate behaviors and responsibilities.
- Physical domain: Movement is incorporated into educational activities throughout the day to facilitate cognitive development as well as to develop fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Children also engage in daily outdoor play and sports activities.
- Creative Expression/Aesthetic Domain: Children are exposed to classic and contemporary music and attend weekly choral lessons with a professional music instructor. Children participate in creative movement, which develops their coordination and creative expression. Children learn to express their own creative ideas and engage in a variety of art activities involving different art media.
- Cognitive Domain: Children are provided with age-appropriate developmental activities that address cognitive skills. Whole-group and small group activities include reading and discussions of literature. Puppet shows and dramatic plays assist children in developing language, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Daily activities also engage children in the understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts, helping children develop logical thinking and spatial awareness. Safe and fun classroom experiments help children understand a variety of physical concepts and processes, such as magnetic force, buoyancy, states of matter, etc.
